The Met Camp 2019 - You Concept LTD

The theme of the Met’s 2019 Costume Exhibition is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”

Camp as in exaggerated fashion, the exhibit is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” Also known as the Costume Institute Gala, the Met Gala is a massive fundraising event that celebrates the opening of a new fashion exhibition each year at the Metropolitan Museum.

Founded by Eleanor Lambert, now it’s the hottest ticket in town with everyone clamouring to be invited. Each year a different dress code is chosen as the theme of the evening to tie in with the exhibition opening. Previous themes have included “Punk: Chaos to Couture” and “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”.

Model Cara Delevingne’s rainbow theme was a tribute to the LGBT community and the Pride-inspired stripes were completed with multi-coloured platform heels and a Swarovski crystal cane. She wore a colorful makeup and a headpiece featuring eyeballs, dentures, banana peels, a fried egg.

Harry Styles collaborated on his outfit with Harry Lambert and Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. The look was elegant and camp, but still Harry.

Meanwhile, Jared Leto wore a long sleeve silk red gown with diamond encrusted detail along the bodice, but the ultimate accessory was a decapitated head of Leto’s own likeness, which he carried like a bag. But the concept isn’t a surprise: Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele first debuted the head clutches during Milan Fashion Week in February.

Last, but not least: like a Russian doll, Gaga took off one layer after another. She began the carpet walk with an army of umbrella holding men in her voluminous pink dress. She then stripped down, cycling through four different outfits, two pink and two black, until she eventually posed in lingerie.

Anna Wintour wore the last Chanel dress that Karl Lagerfeld designed for her.

For celebrities, the annual Met Gala is a chance to show the world how famous and fashionable you are. For the rest of us, it’s a chance to watch extremely attractive people wearing their diamonds and feathers.
